‘New Moon’ leaps and bounds over first ‘Twilight’ opening
Several news outlets are reporting that the new “Twilight” movie New Moon” sold $140.7 million tickets in its opening weekend.
It’s the second movie based on the four teenage vampire books by Stephanie Meyer. The weekend sales exceeded projected sales of about $100 million. The first movie “Twilight” sold $70 million in its first weekend, The New York Times reports.
Over the weekend, “New Moon” doubled the grosses of the first movie. BoxOfficemojo.com said according to exit polling by distributor Summit Entertainment 80 percent of the audience in attendance was female and 50 percent were under the age of 21.
The third movie, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, is scheduled for June 30 of next year.
